In 1928, the year following my experience in Brancusi’s studio, and upon the renewal of my Guggenheim Fellowship, I moved from my studio on the rue Belloni in Paris to one in Gentilly, just outside the city. Tsuguharu Fujita had obtained the studio for me as a result of a letter of introduction from Michio Ito. Foot Tree was perhaps the earliest sculpture made under the profound influence of Brancusi.
