The Noguchi Museum

The Noguchi Museum is currently undergoing a renovation. While the Museum remains open to the public and programming continues, some areas, including the Sculpture Garden will be closed through the end of 2008.

Opened in 1985, The Noguchi Museum is housed in a former factory building located across the street from the Long Island City studio where Isamu Noguchi had worked and lived since the early 1960s. Noguchi designed the Museum complex as an open-air sculpture garden ensconced within a historic building that houses ten galleries. He preserved the industrial integrity of the structure while juxtaposing his artwork to the building. With its reflective spaces and intimate garden, the Museum itself is one of the artist's greatest works and an oasis in Long Island City.

The Museum’s second phase of its multi-stage renovation and stabilization project is designed to ensure the ongoing viability of the building and enable the Museum to meet the needs of its growing audience and expanded exhibition program. This renovation builds upon the earlier work – completing the restoration of the historic 1927 building and entry pavilion and creating climate controlled galleries. The Museum will remain open to the public during our regular visiting hours throughout the project and construction is scheduled to conclude in the end of 2008.

The Museum will remain open to the public during our regular visiting hours throughout the project. All exhibitions, public and education programs will continue during this time.

As the renovation will require the closing of some of the Museum’s galleries and garden, we apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we complete this work which is essential to the integrity of the Museum and the vibrant future of its programs and activities.

The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum’s renovation is generously supported by the City of New York. The Museum wishes to thank Honorable Michael R. Quinn, Speaker of the City Council; and the Queens Delegation of the City Council led by Honorable Leroy Comrie and notably local Council members, Honorable Peter F. Vallone, Jr. and Honorable Eric N. Gioia. Additional support has been provided by the New York State Assembly through the efforts of Queens Assembly members, Honorable Catherine Nolan, Honorable Ivan C. Lafayette, and Honorable Margaret M. Markey.

The renovation is designed by Sage and Coombe Architects.
