When I was working on this, someone came by and said, “That’s too much like Brancusi. You must not allow yourself to be so influenced.” I, on the contrary, felt pleased to be so recognized—a continuity to the past, to one’s own past, is a kind of validation. The recognition of linkage allows for judgment and appreciation of what is added or revolutionary, one’s own. Besides, I am not enslaved to others or to my own past either.
