For the sixth year in a row, The Noguchi Museum partners with Bang on a Can to present an innovative performance series held in the Museum's outdoor sculpture garden. (In case of rain, concerts will take place in the galleries.) Performances are free with Museum admission, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

For one week in February, the chill and grey skies of winter will dissipate for visitors to The Noguchi Museum’s ground-floor galleries, where internationally celebrated pianist Sarah Cahill will take up residence, performing Mamoru Fujieda’s stunning cycle of short pieces titled Patterns of Plants throughout the Museum’s opening hours.

This fall, as part of Museum of Stones, we have turned The Noguchi Museum's floating galleries (Areas 9/10) into a microcosmic outpost of the Asian Art Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This has been possible thanks to the support of Maxwell Hearn, Chairman of the Department of Asian Art, and our collaboration with Joseph Scheier-Dolberg, Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Noguchi Museum has commissioned a new performance by Stephen Lichty on the occasion of its first museum-wide exhibition, Museum of Stones, in which Lichty is exhibiting an untitled sculpture combining stone and gesture. The performance will take place in the Museum’s floating galleries (Areas 9/10) amid a selection of scholars’ rocks and paintings of rocks on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Asian Art.

One way to describe the semantic distinction between rocks and stones is to say that a stone is a rock we have interfered with: Nature makes rocks; we make stones. For example, biblical David picked up a rock; in his slingshot, in the air, and while killing Goliath, that rock was a stone; falling back to earth it again became just a rock; although, had someone picked it up and saved it as a memento, it would have remained a stone. That's one paradigm, anyway.
